Alexandria Democratic Committee 
Thanks Virginia Lawmakers for Laws Restricting ICE; Urges Enactment

(April 6, 2026) The Alexandria Democratic Committee today passed a resolution thanking the Democrats in the Virginia General Assembly — including the entire Alexandria delegation — to pass laws “intended to ensure that the Commonwealth remains a place where every resident, regardless of their citizenship status, can contribute to our collective success without fear.”

The resolution noted that Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins and the Alexandria City Council support the legislation. It urges Governor Spanberger to enact the legislation.

The bills referred to include: 

HB650 and SB351: Protecting Virginia courthouses, polling places, hospitals, and schools from Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE) activity unless ICE obtains a judicial arrest warrant; 

HB1441 and SB783: Significantly restricting local law enforcement co-operation with ICE; 

HB1482 and SB352: Prohibiting on-duty state and federal law enforcement from masking, and requiring them to wear visible identification; 

HB836 and SB491: Ensuring that no Virginia child can be denied a free public education through secondary school, regardless of the actual or perceived immigration or citizenship status of the child or the child’s parents; and 

HB675: Prohibiting employers from committing

Resolutions Passed

Per Section 6 of the Alexandria Democratic Committee Bylaws establishes that: “[a] resolution by which the Committee expresses a position on an issue of public or party concern may be adopted by the Committee.”
