Charles Houston Recreation Center Room Naming Dedication
3:00 pm- reception 4:00 pm – naming ceremony, Charles Houston Recreation Center Room Naming Dedication hosted by the City of Alexandria at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street, Alexandria. The Center's gymnasium will be named after Coach Louis Johnson and Mr. Morris Siebert, two individuals who made outstanding contributions to the youth of Alexandria. The swimming pool will be named the Memorial Pool in honor of African American youth who drowned in the Potomac River, recognizing that before integration African American youths were not permitted to swim in the Alexandria Municipal Pool. 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, “Feeding Our Founding Fathers” Lecture by Michael Twitty at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe Street, Alexandria. Culinary historian Michael Twitty, a leading expert on African-American foodways, explores the role and work of enslaved African Americans in providing food to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. In his illustrated lecture, Twitty examines who the enslaved cooks were, how they were trained, and how they prepared and served food to our nation’s first leaders. Free! Little Conductors Day
10:30 am – 2:30 am, Little Conductors Day -Train Activities for Young Children at Alexandria’s History Museum, The Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street, Alexandria. Let your little one be the conductor at The Lyceum! Young children will love the train activities and exhibits. Children ages 3 through 7 will visit train activity stations, including operating Lego trains presented by the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Train Club, a train-related craft, a train bean-bag toss, Thomas the Tank Engine play table, Lego play area, and a miniature train display. Each child will receive a souvenir ticket listing each activity station. As they visit each station, their ticket is stamped. Timed admission is on the half-hour between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per child and free for caregivers. Children must be with a parent or adult caregiver. Space is limited, so advance reservations and ticket purchase are recommended. Tickets may be purchased by calling 703.746.4994 or by using the online shop at www.alexandriahistory.org.

Dr. Judith Jones, an expert on drug safety and education, will speak on getting the information you need from your healthcare provider and pharmacist, useful sources of information on the Internet and elsewhere, the significance of drug interactions, and storing your medications. Free H1N1 Flu Vaccinations
Free H1N1 Flu Vaccinations. As part of the Alexandria Health Department’s (AHD) H1N1 vaccination outreach initiative, FREE H1N1 vaccinations will be provided at three locations:
8 am - 10 am, as part of the ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) food distribution at the Church of the Resurrection, 2280 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria.
11 am to 1 pm, in conjunction with ESL classes at the Tenants and Workers United Community Center, 3801 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of the Bag Lunch Program at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church, 322 N. Alfred St., Alexandria.
While the vaccinations are targeted towards the populations that these groups serve, anyone is welcome to come receive vaccinations at these times and locations. For more information, call 703.838.4400, ext. 297.
